Our kids love Halloween snacks, especially the candy. But as moms, we like to give them something nutritious to offset the extra sugar.

At The Produce Moms, we enjoy turning fruits and veggies into something familiar so our kids actually enjoy nutrient-packed meals and snacks. And it’s all about how you present it!

Ingredients

Apples, peanut butter, pretzels, and chocolate on a cutting board

As busy moms, we like to avoid extra stress as much as possible. These spider apples use four simple ingredients our kids regularly eat, so they’re usually already in our pantry. No trip to the grocery store needed. Let’s make sure you have everything, too!

Apples

Crunch Pak® recently launched their bags of whole apples. But they’ve made the packaging super kid-friendly with character favorites like Bluey and the pups from PAW Patrol. As moms, we love this because then your kids ask you if you will give them apples. Crunch Pak® whole apples are fresh, juicy, and sweet, and you only need three to make your chocolate-covered apple spiders. You can use the rest of the apples for lunch box snacks!

Peanut Butter

We used smooth peanut butter to keep the “spider” pretzel legs in place. With the crisp crunch from the apple slices and the salty pretzels, you’ve already got the perfect amount of crunch goin’ on. But if you want extra, feel free to use chunky peanut butter or your favorite alternative nut butter.

Pretzels

The sticks make for easy legs on your apple spiders. We like to get a big family size bag so we have extra for another salty snack later. You only need a handful (36 if we’re being exact) to make this creepy crawly apple snack come to life.

Chocolate

Who doesn’t love chocolate, right? We like to use dark chocolate melting wafers because they pair well with the natural sweetness of the apples and the salty pretzel sticks. Our number one goal is to make eating produce fun and tasty for your kids. If milk chocolate is more their style, use it! We love it when they come back asking for more.

How to Make Spiders with Apples

Now that you have your basic ingredients, let’s make your chocolate-covered apple spiders.

Step 1: Prep the apples, pretzels, and chocolate.

Sliced apple rounds

Use a knife to carefully slice each apple into six thin rounds for a total of 18.

Use your hands to break the 36 pretzel sticks in half and set aside.

Put the chocolate wafers in a microwave-safe bowl, heating in 30-second increments. Be sure to stir between intervals so that the chocolate melts evenly for a smooth, glossy texture.

Step 2: Assemble your spider apples.

Spread peanut butter onto apple rounds with a butter knife

Use a butter knife to spread a thick layer of peanut butter on half of the apple slices. You should have nine apple rounds smeared with peanut butter and nine without.

Place eight pretzel “legs” onto each apple slice, using the peanut butter as a glue to keep the pretzels in place.

Put a lollipop or popsicle stick in the center of each peanut butter and pretzel apple slice to make a handle.

Sandwich your spider apples with another apple round.

Sandwich with the remaining apple rounds, gently pressing the rounds together with your fingers. Put them on a parchment-lined baking sheet or serving plate.

Step 3: Cover with chocolate.

Coat spider apples with melted chocolate.

Use a spoon to completely coat the apple spiders with chocolate.

Step 4: Candy eyes.

A bite out of a spider apple

While the chocolate is still melty, place candy eyes on the front of your apple spiders. As the chocolate hardens, the eyes will stay in place for a totally easy-to-transport party or Halloween fruit snack.
