Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if an avocado is ripe?
This is the most common question. A ripe avocado should feel slightly soft when you gently press it with the palm of your hand. If it’s rock hard, it’s not ready. If it’s mushy or has deep indentations, it’s overripe. Another great trick is to flick off the stem cap at the top; if it comes off easily and is green underneath, it’s perfect. If it’s brown, the avocado is likely overripe inside.
How do I keep my guacamole from turning brown?
The main culprit is oxidation, which happens when the avocado flesh is exposed to air. The best methods to prevent this are:
- Lime Juice: The acid in the lime juice is a natural preservative.
- Plastic Wrap: Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole, leaving no air pockets.
- Water Barrier: For short-term storage, you can pour a thin layer of water or lime juice over the surface of the guacamole before covering. Simply pour it off and stir before serving.
- The Pit Trick: While not scientifically proven, some people swear by leaving an avocado pit in the bowl. It’s believed to help slow down browning.

Can I make guacamole in advance?
While guacamole is best served fresh, you can definitely make it a few hours ahead of time. Use one of the methods above to store it in the refrigerator.
What’s the best way to mash avocados?
A fork or a potato masher works perfectly for creating a chunky texture. If you prefer a smoother guacamole, a blender or food processor can be used, but be careful not to over-process it into a purée.

Ingredients Needed to Make Guacamole
- 4 Ripe Westfalia Fruit Avocados (medium to large)
- 1 Tomato (medium to large, diced)
- 1/2 Red Onion (diced)
- 1/3 C Fresh Cilantro (chopped)
- 1 jalapeno, diced
- 1 Tablespoon Minced Garlic
- 1 Tablespoon Lime Juice (freshly squeezed preferred)
- 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
- Salt To taste
- Sour Cream or Mexican Crema For the spiderweb design
How to Make Guacamole

Step 1: Prepare the Guacamole Base
In a medium-sized bowl, scoop out the flesh of the four ripe avocados. Use a fork or potato masher to mash the avocado to your desired consistency. Tip: For the best Halloween guacamole, leave a few chunky pieces for texture.

Step 2: Add the Fresh Ingredients & Season
Gently fold in the minced garlic, diced tomato, diced red onion, diced jalapeno and chopped cilantro. Add the lime juice, garlic powder, and salt to taste. Stir until all the seasonings are evenly distributed.

Step 3: Make the Spiderweb

Add guacamole to your serving bowl. Use the back of a spoon to smooth out the top. Place a portion of sour cream into a ziplock bag and snip off a tiny piece of one corner.

Start on the outer part of the dish, pipe 2 to 5 concentric circles (depending on the size of the bowl) onto the guacamole. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfectly uniform.

Finally, drag a toothpick through the circles, starting from the center and pulling outward toward the edge of the dish. Repeat this several times around the circle to create the web effect.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve
For the ultimate spooky guacamole effect, place a small plastic spider (make sure it’s clean!) right in the middle of the web. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, veggie sticks, or crackers.
