How to Make Dessert Taco Shells

The Produce Moms’ Tip: If you already have burrito sized tortillas on hand, use a 3.5″ circle cutter to cut out the tortillas. You can use any size you have on hand, we found this size to be the easiest to work with for this recipe.

There are two ways you can make the taco shells:

Stove Top:

  • Heat about 1 ½” of oil in a pan on the stove over medium heat.
  • Using tongs, place one tortilla in the oil for about 5 seconds. Flip it over and fold it in half holding it folded for about 5 seconds or until browned. Flip over and fry the other side until crispy. Immediately remove from the oil, give it a little shake and place into the cinnamon sugar.

Oven:

If the kids are helping, this will be a safer option to baking the tortilla shells. This also allows you to make a lot more tortillas at a time! Here’s how:

  • Place each tortilla (that’s been dusted with cinnamon and sugar on both sides) in between the muffin tins on the upside down muffin pan. The pan will hold the tortillas in a taco shape while they bake.
  • Bake shells. Bake for 10 minutes or until the tortillas begin to take on a golden brown color and become crispy. If they are not baked for long enough they may be slightly chewy instead of crispy. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir to combine, and add into the apples, stirring to incorporate into the sauce. This helps to thicken the sauce up for the filling. Cook for about a minute until thick and then remove from the heat.
