At The Produce Moms, we believe fresh fruits and vegetables aren’t just for the human members of your family! Our four-legged friends deserve the wholesome benefits of fresh produce, too!

Pears are packed with essential vitamins like Vitamin C and K, as well as beneficial dietary fiber, making them a fantastic, naturally sweet addition to your pup’s diet. Combining juicy, nutrient-rich pears with high-protein chicken breast creates a savory-sweet homemade treat that will have your dog sitting, staying, and wagging their tail for more.

Plus, making your own dog treats at home gives you full control over the ingredients, ensuring no unnecessary preservatives, added sugars, or artificial additives enter your furry best friend’s bowl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are pears safe for dogs to eat?

Yes! Pears are a safe, low-calorie snack for dogs that are high in fiber, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K. Always be sure to remove the core and seeds first, as pear seeds contain small trace amounts of cyanide and can present a choking hazard.

Are cinnamon and ginger safe for dogs?

In small, balanced amounts like those used in this recipe, both cinnamon and ginger are safe and offer beneficial anti-inflammatory and digestive support for dogs. Never use nutmeg, as it can be harmful to pets.

Why do I need to keep the oven door cracked slightly open? Cracking the oven door open allows trapped moisture and steam to escape, which is essential for dehydrating and drying out the chicken strips into jerky rather than simply baking them.

How do I know when the chicken jerky is fully done? The jerky is done when it looks dry, feels firm to the touch, and bends slightly without feeling damp or spongy in the center.

Ingredients for

  • 2 Pears, skinned, cored, and chopped
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Ginger (freshly grated or ground)
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 2 – 3 cups Water (plus extra if needed)
  • 3 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts

Step-by-Step Directions

First, make the marinade. Add the prepared pears, ginger, cinnamon, and 2–3 cups of water into a blender. Puree until completely smooth. Set the pear marinade aside.

Then, prep the chicken. Rinse the chicken breasts under cool water and pat dry. Trim off any visible fat. Slice the chicken into thin, uniform strips (slicing partially frozen chicken makes this step much easier!).

Next, place the chicken strips into a large bowl or sealable bag and pour the pear marinade over top. If needed, add a splash of extra water to ensure the chicken is fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to infuse.

Preheat the oven. Set your oven to 180°F (82°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a wire cooling rack.

Then, arrange the strips. Lay the marinated chicken strips on the baking sheet about ½ inch apart. Brush a little extra marinade over each strip for maximum flavor.

Finally, slow-dry to perfection: Place the sheet in the oven. Keep the oven door cracked slightly open (you can use a wooden spoon to hold it open) to allow moisture to escape. Bake for about 3 ½ hours, or until the chicken reaches a firm, dry appearance and texture throughout. Allow to cool completely before serving to your dog.

Storage Tips

  • Refrigeration: Store cooled jerky treats in an airtight container or sealable silicone bag in the refrigerator for up to 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Freezing: For longer storage, place the treats in a freezer-safe bag or container and freeze for up to 3 months. Simply thaw a treat at room temperature for a few minutes before giving it to your dog!

The Produce Moms Tip

Make sure the treats are 100% cool before sealing them in a container to prevent condensation, which can reduce their shelf life.

Fun Treat Variations

  • Swap the Fruit: Try swapping the pears for fresh apples (skinned and cored—never give dogs apple seeds!) or pureed pumpkin for a seasonal fall twist.
  • Add Greens: Blend a small handful of fresh spinach or parsley into the pear puree. Parsley is great for helping freshen your dog’s breath!
  • Sweet Potato Boost: Mix in 2 tablespoons of plain cooked sweet potato puree into the marinade for an extra boost of beta-carotene and fiber.
  • Dehydrator Method: If you own a food dehydrator, set it to 160°F–165°F and dehydrate the marinated chicken strips for 5 to 8 hours until fully dried.
