I’m going to get a little personal on this post. I know most of you hate hearing the stories of Aunt Edna and why the recipe came about, but this blackberry jam recipe is super close to my heart. You see, my Grandma and Grandpa lived in Hayesville, NC. They had blackberry and blueberry bushes all throughout their property. Every time I went to visit, before I left, I raided the pantry and would grab a few jars of my Grandmother’s Blackberry Jam. It was absolutely delicious and could literally smother anything in it and it would be amazing.

My Grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and quickly deteriorated and passed within 6 months. I have a lot of her recipes, but I never got this one. As I’m typing this it still saddens me to this day as my eyes fill up with tears. She’s been gone now for almost 12 years and it seems like an eternity.

Moral of the story, if you have a family member whose recipes you love, ask them for the recipes while they are still here so that you have their keepsake. In fact, write it on a piece of paper and then later you can turn it into a sign to display in your home!

Alright, enough about that, let’s get to this recipe….

How to Sterilize Jars

To sterilize the jars that you’ll be using to store the jam, place them in boiling water for a minimum of 10 minutes. You want the water to submerge the mason jar. Then to completely dry the jars, set on a baking sheet and place them in a 325° oven for about 10 minutes.

Carefully remove from the oven and allow to cool before adding in the jam.

Ingredients for Blackberry Jam

ingredients needed for homemade blackberry jam recipe
  • Naturipe® Blackberries – be sure to rinse the blackberries and dry them completely.
  • Granulated Sugar – allows the blackberries to sweat, produces the liquid and of course sweetens the jam
  • Pectin – this helps to thicken the jam

How to Make Blackberry Jam

Start by placing the blackberries, sugar and pectin in a large saucepan. Over medium low heat, stir to completely dissolve the sugar. You’ll want to ensure the sugar has dissolved otherwise the texture of your jam will be gritty and not smooth. To tell if the sugar has dissolved entirely, it’ll begin to produce more liquid.

Bring the mixture to a rolling boil (a boil that can’t be stirred down) over high heat for about 5 minutes. If you are using a Dutch oven like we did you should be fine, but a lighter pan may result in the jam sticking to the bottom of the pan. Rub a spoon to the bottom of the pan to ensure this isn’t happening. If so, stir the jam ever so slightly and turn the heat down a little bit.

Using a candy thermometer, test the temperature. Once the jam has reached 105°C/220° F it has reached its setting point. At this point turn off the heat and allow it to cool for about 10-15 minutes. Skim off any excess from on the top of the pan for a clean jam. If you don’t get it all no worries!

Homemade Jam will last in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can also place it in the freezer as it’s good for up to 6 months.
