What is the difference between blood oranges and regular oranges?

Blood oranges are a type of orange that gets their name from their deep red flesh. The fruit is slightly smaller than a regular orange and has a slightly different flavor profile, with notes of raspberry and pomegranate. While blood oranges can be used in any recipe that calls for regular oranges, their unique flavor makes them especially well suited for use in desserts and other sweet dishes.

What Can I Use Instead of Hazelnut Spread on these Apple Pinwheels

If you’re not a fan of hazelnut spread, or if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can use almond butter or peanut butter in place of the hazelnut spread. Both of these ingredients will add a similar level of creaminess and flavor to the pinwheels. If you’re using almond butter or peanut butter, we recommend adding a teaspoon or two of honey to the filling to help offset the bitterness of the nuts.

Need a nut-free idea? You can also use sunflower butter. If you want to stay away from any type of butter ingredient, whipped cream cheese works well too. Blood Orange and Apple Tortilla Pinwheels

Can They Be Made Ahead?

These tortilla pinwheels are the perfect make-ahead snack or appetizer. To make ahead, simply prepare the pinwheels as directed and store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to serve, slice the pinwheels and enjoy!

Also, place any leftovers in the refrigerator for an additional 2 days.

Tips for Making Blood Orange and Apple Tortilla Pinwheels

For the best flavor, we recommend using fresh blood oranges in this recipe. If you can’t find fresh blood oranges, you can use canned or jarred blood oranges, but be sure to drain them well before using.

Be sure to slice the fruit into thin slices. This will allow the tortilla to roll easier and not tear.

To get perfectly thin slices of apple, we recommend using a mandoline slicer. If you don’t have a mandoline, you can use a sharp knife to carefully slice the apples as thinly as possible.

You can use whole wheat or white flour tortillas.

For a more festive look, try using colored tortillas.
