Can this American Flag Cake be Made in Advance?
We love when we can make things in advance. It helps eliminate stress and allows more time for other things that need to get done. So, we love the idea of the American Flag Cake since you you can make it a day in advance.
What we like to do is bake the cake the day before. Then, cover it well, and store it at room temperature. We also make the frosting, store it in an airtight container, and place it in the refrigerator.
The day of the party, bring the frosting to room temperature to make it easier to use. Once the cake is frosted, add the fruit and the cake it ready to serve.
How to Store the Fruit Flag Cake
Store the cake in the refrigerator. Cover the cake well with plastic wrap to keep it protected from the air. Because the cake has fresh fruit on it, you need to keep it refrigerated.
How to Freeze the Cake
You can freeze the American Flag Cake if you have leftovers. We recommend taking the fruit off the cake before freezing. Freezing the fruit will change the texture of the fruit and makes it a little less appealing.
Variations to The American Flag Cake
Change up the cake flavor. We are using a classic white cake mix for this cake. You can use your favorite homemade cake recipe, but you can also change the type of cake you are making. Some people enjoy yellow cake, chocolate cake or even a Funfetti cake mix. Since you are covering the cake with white frosting, you can make whatever flavor you choose.
You could also make it a poke cake. If you wanted to give this cake even more flavor, you can easily turn it into a poke cake. You can use sweetened condensed milk, any flavor of pudding, or even make a strawberry glaze inside of the cake.
Switch the fruit. Use raspberries instead of strawberries. You can also use blackberries, cherries or any other type of berry you like. If you want to use mango or pineapple, those work well too.
Change the frosting. You can use whatever type of frosting that you like. Cool Whip is a nice light frosting that most people love. Also, a buttercream icing is simple to make, or you can also use a simple cream cheese frosting that you buy from the store.
