Rainbow Swiss Chard Tart

This Rainbow Swiss Chard Tart is the perfect meal to enjoy during the spring and summer months. It’s packed with fresh vegetables and has a light and fluffy crust. You won’t be able to resist taking a bite of this tart!

Not only is this tart tasty, but it’s also good for you. Swiss chard is a leafy green vegetable that is high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It’s the perfect way to get your daily dose of nutrients!

What is a Tart?

A tart is a baked dish that has a number of different meanings. It can refer to a sweet or savory dish that has an open crust. Tarts can be made with various types of dough, but the most common is puff pastry.

In this case, the tart is made using Bright Lights® from Salad Savoy. Bright Lights® is their name for what is commonly known as rainbow swiss chard. The colorful leaves of the Bright Lights® add a beautiful touch to the tart, and the whole dish comes together with lots of healthy nutrients. Plus, it is full of flavor and great taste.

What does Swiss Chard Taste Like?

Swiss chard has a slightly bitter taste, but when it’s cooked with other ingredients, the flavor is mellowed out. The texture of Swiss chard is similar to that of spinach. When cooked, it becomes tender and wilted.

How to Store Leftovers

Leftover tart can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Place the leftovers in an airtight container or in a freezer bag. Reheat in the oven or microwave. You can even eat this swiss chard tart cold. This tart is also great for meal prep, so that you can cook once and reheat it for a few days.

Can Swiss Chard Tart Be Frozen?

Yes, the swiss chard tart can be frozen. Once the tart has cooled completely, you can move it to an airtight freezer safe container or to a freezer bag. Remove all the air from the freezer bag or place a piece of plastic wrap over the container to prevent freezer burn. The tart can last for up to 3 months.

When ready to eat, thaw at room temperature for an hour or reheat in the oven or microwave.

Can I Use Other Cheese?

This recipe uses ricotta, swiss cheese and gruyere. If you wanted to use a different cheese, you certainly could. You can add parmesan cheese, or you can also use cheddar cheese or goat cheese.

Variations to the Swiss Chard Tart

In addition to changing the cheese in this recipe, there are other ways that you can change things up to fit the flavors you are looking for in this dish.

If you want a bit more of a spice, you could add some red pepper flakes. If you aren’t a fan of Swiss cheese, you can use another cheese in its place. You could also try leaving the cheese out entirely.

Another idea is to add some caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms to the tart. This will add a flavorful element that is sure to please your taste buds!

Ingredients

  • Bright Lights® (chop stems, ribbon leaves)
  • Sweet or white onion, chopped
  • Garlic
  • Olive oil
  • Puff Pastry
  • Ricotta
  • Gruyère 
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Salt and pepper to tasted
  • Egg yolk
  • Water

How to Make the rainbow Swiss Chard Tart

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan or over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook. Stir frequently, until translucent, about 7 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Then, add garlic cloves and cook for 30 seconds. Next, add in the chopped Bright Lights® stems and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Then, add in the ribbon leaves. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, or until the leaves begin to wilt, approximately 10 minutes. Drain the water out of the pan.
  2.  Preheat your oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 
  3.  Lay out your two puff pastry sheets on the baking sheet, combining them to make one large tart.
  4. Spread a thin layer of ricotta on the bottom of the dough, leaving a two to three-inch border all the way around. Then add the shredded Gruyère.  Next, spread the Bright Lights® mix over top in a thin, even layer. Top it with shredded swiss cheese. Then,Fold the edges of the dough inward over the filling. Pinch together any tears in the dough. 
  5. Beat the egg and water to form egg wash. Brush it over the exposed crust.
  6. Bake until the crust has browned and the cheese has melted, 20-30 minutes. Slide the tart off the parchment and onto a cooling rack or cutting board. 
  7. Let it cool for 10 minutes. Cut, serve and enjoy!

Ingredients 

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large sweet or white onion chopped

  • 1 cup fresh ricotta
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère

  • 1 tablespoon water
