If your kids are anything like ours, they come home from school hungry and ready to snack. As soon as they hop off the bus at 3 PM, they transform into ravenous little monsters! The only thing that can transform them back is a delicious after-school snack. Some nutritious after-school snacks are too labor-intensive to make on busy afternoons. Convenience snacks are obviously much easier, but they are usually loaded with sodium, sugar, and artificial ingredients. We have discovered three fun, no-cook after-school snack ideas that incorporate nutritious produce, are easy to assemble, and are kid-approved.
First, we should mention we are big believers in putting out a โno-askโ produce basket on the table or countertop. The kids can eat anything in the basket without asking permission first. Of course, we stock the basket with nutritious fruits and veggies so we know they’re always getting something good for them. But sometimes they want something more. Thatโs when we whip up one of these fun and easy after-school snacksโฆ
Banana โSushiโ
What Youโll Need
- Bananas
- Flour Tortillas
- Peanut Butter or Nutella
- Various Toppings/Fillings (try coconut flakes, pecans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, or raisins)
How To Assemble
- Start by spreading peanut butter or Nutella onto the flour tortilla, going almost to the very outside edge.
- Sprinkle coconut flakes, crushed nuts, or filling of your choice onto the peanut butter or Nutella spread. Place an entire, peeled banana in the middle of the tortilla and roll up tightly.
- Using a knife, cut into 1/2″ “sushi” bites. Sprinkle with more toppings if desired. Enjoy!
Apple Ring โCookiesโ
What Youโll Need
- Apples
- Peanut Butter and/or Nutella
- Toppings of your Choice (try dark chocolate chips, coconut flakes, crushed nuts, sunflower seeds, or raisins)
How To Assemble
- Cut the apple into 1/4″ rounds, cutting through the core.
- Remove the apple core. (You don’t need a special tool for this. We used the metal lid off an olive oil jar. Simply place the lid over top the core and press firmly to remove.)
- Spread peanut butter or Nutella onto the apple rings. If the spread does not want to stick, use a paper towel to pat the apple rings dry first.
- Sprinkle with the toppings of your choice and serve.
You can skip the first two steps by using one of our favorite products, Apple Rings from Crunch Pakยฎ.ย They are pre-cut, cored, and ready to decorate!
Pear โNachosโ
What You’ll Need
- Pears
- Toppings of your Choice (try peanut butter, coconut flakes, dark chocolate chips, raisins, sunflower seeds, and chopped nuts)
How To Assemble
- Core pear and cut into wedges.
- Add toppings and enjoy!
These fun after-school snack ideas are impressive looking but donโt be fooled. They are truly easy to assemble! And because they donโt require any cooking, they are especially fast to whip up. Your kids will love these playful snack ideas and you can feel good about helping them get more produce into their diets. Thatโs what we call a parenting win!
