Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best pears to use for this recipe?

We recommend Bosc pears because their firm texture helps them hold their shape perfectly during the baking process, ensuring your filling isn’t too mushy.

Can I make the filling ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the filling and the topping separately and store them in airtight containers in the refrigerator overnight. Assemble and bake the crumble right before you plan to serve it for the best results.

How should I serve pear crumble?

This crumble is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

Substitutions and Variations

Pears and Fruit

  • Holiday Tartness Variation: For a festive touch, add 1/2 of frozen cranberries to the pear filling before baking.

Topping and Flour

  • Gluten-Free Option: For a gluten-free crumble, substitute the all-purpose flour in the topping with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend.
  • Protein Power: For a heartier flavor with added protein, use 1/2 cup of almond flour in place of 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour.
  • Extra Crunch: Add 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans to the dry topping mixture for extra crunch.
  • Oats Note: Quick oats can be used in a pinch, but old-fashioned rolled oats provide the best, most defined texture.

Vegan and Spice

  • Vegan Alternative: For a vegan crumble, use chilled solid coconut oil, cut into small cubes, instead of melted butter. Rub the oil into the flour mix until coarse crumbs form.
  • Spicier Taste: Add 1/2 tsp of ground ginger to the filling spices for a spicier, more festive taste.

How to Make This Easy Pear Crumble at Home

Step 1: Prep the oven and pears. Preheat your oven to 375ºF (190ºC). Lightly grease and 8X8 inch baking dish or 9-inch round pie dish. In a large bowl, combine the chopped pears.

Step 2: Next, create the filling. Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg to the bowl of pears. Toss gently until all the diced pears are evenly coated. Pour the mixture into your prepared baking dish.

Step 3: Then, mix the crumble topping. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the melted butter over the dry ingredients. Mix with a fork until the mixture is fully incorporated and looks like coarse, thick crumbs.

Step 4: Finally, bake to perfection. Evenly sprinkle the entire crumble topping over the pear filling. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the pear filling is bubbling around the edges. Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
