What You’ll Need

You’ll need just a few simple things to marinate feta cheese. First, a mason jar and lid (or something similar). In our recipe, we used an eight-ounce mason jar. You can use a larger container, but you’ll need to increase your ingredient quantities accordingly.

You’ll need just a few ingredients. You can use whatever herbs you’d like but we recommend fresh thyme and fresh oregano. Some minced garlic and freshly ground pepper is a great addition, regardless of which herbs you choose. And some good-quality olive oil is mandatory.

How To Marinate Feta Cheese

Begin by cutting your feta cheese into flat squares — about 1/4 inch thick and two inches wide.

Then, place a small amount of the olive oil into your jar, about 1/4 inch. The bottom should be fully covered.

Next, place a square of feta cheese into the jar. Layer some of the herbs, garlic, and fresh pepper on top. Place another piece of feta cheese on top and repeat this step until the jar is full. For an eight-ounce jar, it’s about 3 layers.

Finally, fill the jar to the top with olive oil. Cover the jar with a lid and refrigerate overnight, allowing the cheese to marinate in the herby mixture. The longer that the cheese marinates, the stronger the flavors will be.

Serve marinated feta cheese on crackers or crusty bread. It makes a great snack or appetizer. Little jars of marinated feta cheese also make wonderful gifts! Tie a ribbon on the jar and pass out to your neighbors and co-workers during the holiday season.
