Learn how to select, store, and serve pineapple
Pineapples have the special ability to transport you to somewhere tropical in your mind after just one bite. In addition to its sweet, tropical flavor, pineapple is a nutritional powerhouse. It contains high amounts of vitamin C and manganese. Pineapple is well known for its ability to help aid in weight management because of the fiber and enzymes it contains. Additionally, pineapple can help ease inflammation and boost immune system health.
How to Select Pineapple
Many people falsely believe that the color of the outer shell of a pineapple indicates its ripeness, but a pineapple can be ripe even if the shell is almost entirely green. Instead of looking at the color of the shell, pay attention to its firmness. If the body is soft, pass it over for a firmer one. Look for firm, green leaves at the crown and select a pineapple that is heavy for its size.
Larger pineapples contain more edible fruit. It doesn’t necessarily mean it will taste any better, but it does indicate how many servings you’ll be able to get from it.
How to Store Pineapple
Once picked, a pineapple will not ripen any further or get any sweeter. Your pineapple will be at its most delicious when eaten right away. Pineapples can be stored at room temperature but if you plan to wait more than a couple of days to eat it, store it in your refrigerator for a longer shelf life.
Fresh pineapple can also be frozen. Core the pineapple and cut it into rings or chunks and store in a freezer bag in the freezer. Be sure to remove as much air as you can from the freezer bag in order to prevent freezer burn. Use within 6-12 months.
