Carrots are an absolute staple in our kitchens! They are budget-friendly, vibrant, packed with Vitamin A and fiber, and naturally sweet. We love them raw, roasted, grilled, or shredded into salads. And boiling carrots is one of the easiest, fastest ways to get a nutritious side dish on the dinner table on busy weeknights.

However, we often get asked: “How long do I actually boil carrots so they aren’t mushy or rubbery?” Today, weโ€™re sharing everything you need to know to get tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked boiled carrots every single time!

Do I Need to Peel Carrots Before Boiling?

The short answer is: No, you don’t strictly have to peel carrots before boiling them! Carrot skin is completely edible and contains plenty of beneficial nutrients and fiber.

Peeling the carrots on a cutting board

Here is how to decide whether to peel or unpeel for your dish:

  • Wash: All you need is to rinse the carrots under cold water. If you chose to leave ths kin on, it also saves valuable prep time on busy evenings!
  • When to peel: Older, store-bought large carrots tend to have slightly thicker, bitter, or earthy skins. Peeling them gives your dish a brighter orange appearance and a smoother, sweeter texture, which kids often prefer!
  • Baby carrots: Pre-cut baby carrots are already peeled during processing, so you can jump straight to rinsing and cooking!

How To Boil Carrots

Boiling carrots is simple, but keeping an eye on your cut size and timer is the key to achieving that ideal fork-tender bite without turning them into mush.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cut rounds of carrots on a cutting board

First, prep & cut. Wash your carrots thoroughly. Peel if desired. Slice them uniformly into 1/4-inch coins, batons, or leave whole depending on your preference. Even cuts ensure even cooking!

Next, bring the water to a boil. Bring a pot of salted water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Adding a pinch of salt enhances the natural sweetness of the carrots.

Then, add the carrots to the boiling water. Carefully drop the sliced carrots into the boiling water. Lower the heat slightly to maintain a gentle, steady boil. Boil according to the table below. Start checking at the minimum recommended time by inserting a fork or paring knife into the thickest piece.
