Halloween may be known for candy, but there are plenty of ways to make fruits and vegetables part of the fun, too.

These Halloween kiwis are:

  • Made with just 4 simple ingredients
  • Quick and easy to assemble
  • Kid-friendly and fun to make together
  • A festive way to serve fresh fruit
  • Perfect for Halloween parties and snack boards
  • No baking required

The naturally fuzzy brown skin of a kiwi makes surprisingly convincing Frankenstein hair, while pretzel pieces become his famous neck bolts. Add candy eyes and a few details with melted chocolate, and Frankenstein comes to life!

How to Choose Kiwi for Frankenstein Kiwis

For this recipe, start with kiwis that are ripe but still firm enough to hold their shape while you peel and decorate them.

Look for kiwi that are plump and unblemished with rough, fuzzy skin. A ripe kiwi should be slightly firm but have a little give when you gently squeeze it. Avoid kiwi that are bruised, wrinkled, dimpled, or very soft.

Ingredients

You only need four ingredients to make these adorable Frankenstein kiwi snacks.

Fresh kiwis: Choose four fresh kiwis for this recipe. Each kiwi is cut in half, giving you eight Frankenstein faces.

Pretzel sticks: Small pieces of pretzel sticks create Frankenstein’s signature bolts.

Chocolate chips: Melted chocolate is used to attach the candy eyes and draw Frankenstein’s mouth and scar.

Candy eyes: These instantly transform the kiwi into a silly Halloween monster.

How to Make Frankenstein Kiwis

One of the best things about this Halloween fruit treat is how simple it is to make. There’s no baking, and the decorating doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, every Frankenstein can have his own personality!

Step 1: Create Frankenstein’s Hair

Cutting the kiwis for Kiwi Frankensteins

Cut each kiwi in half lengthwise.

Carefully remove about two-thirds of the kiwi skin, leaving some of the fuzzy brown skin attached around the top.

Cut the remaining skin into a jagged shape to create Frankenstein’s messy hairline.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate

Place the chocolate chips in a small microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave until melted, stirring until the chocolate is completely smooth.

Step 3: Add the Pretzel Bolts

Break approximately ½-inch pieces from the ends of the pretzel sticks.

Gently press one pretzel piece into each side of the kiwi to create Frankenstein’s signature bolts.

Step 4: Make the Frankenstein Faces

Use a toothpick to dab a small amount of melted chocolate onto the back of each candy eye.

Place two eyes onto each kiwi.

Then use the toothpick and remaining melted chocolate to draw a mouth and Frankenstein-style scar onto each face.

Don’t worry about making them identical. Different expressions make these little monsters even more fun!

Step 5: Serve

Serve your Frankenstein kiwis immediately, or place them in the refrigerator until the chocolate has hardened.

A Fun Halloween Fruit Idea for Kids

Getting kids excited about produce can sometimes be as simple as changing the presentation.

Instead of simply putting sliced kiwi on a plate, turning it into a familiar Halloween character makes snack time an activity. Kids can even help decorate their own Frankenstein faces.

Set out the prepared kiwi halves along with candy eyes, pretzel pieces, and melted chocolate and let everyone create their own monster.

These Frankenstein Kiwis would be fun for Halloween parties, classroom celebrations, after-school snacks, Halloween movie nights, October playdates, Halloween fruit trays, or spooky snack boards.

Tips for Making the Best Halloween Kiwis

Leave enough skin for the hair. You want to remove most of the kiwi skin while keeping a generous strip at the top for Frankenstein’s fuzzy hair.

Use a toothpick for decorating. It gives you much more control than trying to drizzle the chocolate directly from a spoon.

Let the chocolate cool slightly. Chocolate that is extremely hot and runny can be more difficult to use for the facial details.

Embrace imperfect Frankensteins. Jagged hair, crooked smiles, and slightly different scars make them look even more fun.

Serve them chilled. If you have time, refrigerating the finished kiwis allows the chocolate to firm up before serving.
