The mango is such a sweet and beloved fruit that it earned its own holiday! Today is National Mango Day and being in the middle of July, what better time is there to enjoy this cool, refreshing fruit? But you donโt just have to chop it up and toss it in a fruit salad. Enjoy it in a traditional Mexican style with this Mango on a Stick!
How to Make Mango on a Stick
This recipe is simple, but thereโs more to it than simply skewering a mango! This classic Mexican street food is also called a Mango Flower. With careful slicing you can turn a skewered mango into a unique, eye-catching snack thatโs fun and easy to eat!
To make the rest of the prep process easier, start by peeling and skewering your mangos. The mango is a hefty fruit, so youโll need thicker skewers than you normally would for typical kabobs and other stick-based snacks and meals. Once youโve skewered the mango, itโs easier to slice the petals. Take care not to slice all the way through the fruit when making each petal!
Once your mango flower has bloomed, itโs time to add a flavorful kick. Sweet mango flavor pairs perfectly with a bit of spice. In Mexico, you might find this snack sprinkled with chili powder. We chose to use Tajin powder for its delicious citrusy, spicy flavor. Start by sprinkling lime juice over the mango, then dust it with Tajin powder for a sweet and spicy treat for the senses!
Mango on a Stick
Ingredients
- 3 mangos preferably large and meaty
- 3 thick wooden skewers with a point
- 2 tbsp Tajin chile powder
- 2 limes 1 juiced and 1 sliced
Instructions
- Peel mango using a knife or sharp vegetable peeler.
- Slice a couple of inches off rounded end of mango and insert wooden skewer into the exposed seed centered. Push and twist skewer to work it into the mango. The skewer needs to be far enough inside the mango to support it without sticking out the other side.
- Use a knife to make small slices in the mango for the โpetalsโ. Start at the bottom (skewered side) of the mango and make a row of petals, working your way up. Gently slice downward diagonally into the flesh, angling your knife parallel to the skewer before slicing all the way through. When making each successive row, slice the petals between the ones in the previous row.
- Drizzle lime juice over the mango and dust with Tajin powder. Plate with sliced limes as a garnish. Serve immediately and enjoy!
