Give your next meal an avocado boost! From tacos to toast, smoothies to salads, avocados are a versatile fruit. Their delightfully creamy texture and irresistible flavor make them excellent for toppings, for baking, for mashing, or for getting creative in the kitchen. And each avocado is packed with nutritional benefits so you can feel good about adding them to your meals. But did you know you can choose from different avocado sizes? Small, Large, and Jumbo Mission avocados are each suited to different kinds of dishes. No matter which size you pick, it’s sure to be a popular addition to your pantry!

What’s In Your Avocado?

The avocado is a produce superhero! As a USDA-approved Heart Healthy Superfood, it’s full of nutrients that can help make your meals not just good, but good for you. Avocados naturally contain no sugar, sodium, or cholesterol and are a good source of fiber. The monounsaturated fats or “good fats” they contain help your body absorb essential nutrients like Vitamin A, D, K, and E. They’re gluten-free and vegan, so they’ll fit right in no matter your diet!

Choosing the Right Avocado Sizes

Mission Produce knows that each dish requires a different amount of avocado and that it’s a shame to let any go to waste. That’s why they ship different sizes of avocados that are categorized as either small, large, or jumbo. By picking different sizes of avocados, Mission can take advantage of what each tree is producing at their farms around the world. Make your meal prep even easier by choosing the right avocado sizes for the meals you want to use them in.

And don’t forget about their ripeness! Different levels of ripeness make avocados better for different purposes. Use less ripe avocados for slicing and more ripe ones for mashing or blending.

Small

They may be little, but they’re mighty – and useful! Small avocados generally serve one or two people, depending on the recipe. Because they are just the right size for single-serving use, you won’t need to store half of the avocado later just to watch it go bad. The right size = less food waste!

You’ll find many uses for small avocados in your kitchen. If you have a little one at home, blend small avocados in your homemade baby food. Your older kids will love smoothies made using small avocados, and they’re the perfect size to stash in a lunchbox. They also make appealing garnishes for soup or chili or tasty toppings for sandwiches or burgers!

We often find ourselves using small avocados in breakfast recipes. They help make breakfast a nutritious start to any day. But your breakfast dish doesn’t have to be served in the morning; everyone loves breakfast for dinner sometimes, too! Here’s one way to incorporate small avocados into your morning meal:

Avocado Breakfast Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 small avocado
  • ½ banana
  • ½ cup spinach
  • 2 dates, pitted
  • 2 tbsp extra thick rolled oats
  • ¾ cup milk of your choice

Directions

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Large

Large avocados are a staple in kitchens around the world. Each one serves about three to four people when made all at once. But if you don’t use it all, you can save the rest of your large avocado for later.

Whether they’re in the lead role or a supporting actor, large avocados work well in all kinds of dishes. Slice them up and add them to tacos or mash them on toast for a classic breakfast snack. You can even use slivers of large avocados as part of your sushi rolls!

But large avocados can do more than just top other foods. Try battering and frying them for a rich, crispy side. You can even cut them into chunks and lightly season them for a quick and easy snack. But one of our favorite ways to prepare standalone avocados is on the grill:

Grilled Avocado

Ingredients

  • Large avocado
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Toppings of your choice (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat your grill to the highest temperature (up to 500 degrees)
  2. Halve the avocado and remove pit.
  3. Brush lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt.
  4. Place avocados cut side down on the grill and close the lid.
  5. Grill for 10-15 minutes until heated through and grill marks appear.
  6. Top with sea salt and your choice of toppings, such as hot sauce or pico de gallo.

Jumbo

When you need lots of avocado, jumbo is the way to go! Jumbo avocados can serve four or more people.

If you asked us to list our favorite avocado dishes, guacamole would be near the top! Jumbo avocados are perfect for guac. With just a few, you can make a big bowl of fresh and flavorful guacamole to share with your family and friends. Big slices of jumbo avocados make delicious salad toppers and look great on any party platter.

Like other avocado sizes, jumbo avocados give you the chance to get creative! Try using them in breads; you can substitute avocados for bananas in your banana bread, for example. Blend one in your next homemade hummus bowl for an extra-creamy pita chip dip. With cream, milk, sugar, and lime juice, you can even make ice cream out of jumbo avocados!
